- 26 bones of foot, 3 different sets.
- 7 Tarsal Bones in each foot.
- Forefoot bones: metatarsus and phalanges.
- 5 metatarsal bones in each foot.
- 14 phalanges in each foot.
- Tarsal bones largest.
- Tarsal bones of males more massive and heavier than female.
- Tarsus = talus, calcaneus, cuboid, navicular, medial, intermediate and lateral cuneiforms.
- Foot function: bear weight of body in standing + locomotion.
- Proximal Tarsus: talus and calcaneus.
- Distal Tarsus: medial, intermediate and lateral cuneiforms and cuboid.
- Navicular is inserted between the Distal and Proximal Tarsus.
- Talus articulates with tibia and fibula (forms ankle or talocrural joint)
- Distal row of tarsal bones articulates with metatarsal bones (tarsometatarsal joints)
- 5 Metatarsal bones numbered from one to five (medial to lateral)
- First metatarsal is the thickest.
- Second to fifth metatarsal referred to as lesser metatarsals.
- Each metatarsal head consists of a head, shaft and proximal base.
- Base of metatarsal bones articulate with distal row of tarsal bones at tarsometatarsal joints.
- metatarsal heads articulate with proximal phalanges at mtatarsophalangeal joints.
- Phalanges are also miniature long bones and hav proximal bases, shafts and distal heads.
